About the Hillcrest Camera Club

What HCC is and what it is not

The club is a gathering of people who love photography, love to hang out with other photographers, and who are dedicated to improving both their own and others’ pictures. The more experienced members are always willing to offer a helping hand, and there are regular demonstrations of photographic techniques.

The skills of members do advance over time (sometime in leaps and bounds), but the club is not a quick-fix solution for people who want to learn to use their cameras in the shortest possible time. These people would be much better off doing a short photographic course (one of our members offers one) or getting a good book on the subject. And then joining the club, of course.

First monthly meeting

This is held on the first Tuesday of every month at 7pm. We generally try and have a speaker or a demo for the first half of each meeting and then we look at and discuss members’ pictures. There is a limit of three entries per member per meeting. Although there is no limit on subject, we encourage members to bring one each of the set subject, one from an outing and one general.

We suggest that you bring prints larger than 6x8inches and stick them onto cardboard to make them easier to display. Ask Allan Jackson or Harry Lock about reusable cardboard mounts, if you want. We also have projection facilities so you can bring pictures on a memory stick or CD to show them. Please lable them according to the catergory Set Subject, Outing or Open.

Pictures are discussed on a friendly and informal basis and THERE IS NO COMPETITION so nobody needs to stress about showing their pictures. There are no star gradings as you find in other clubs. Just a lot of fun.

Second monthly meeting

This is held on the third Thursday of the month at 7p.m. and was introduced at the request of members. It is more workshop and discussion-oriented. The meeting format is more participative and involves the discussion of various aspects of photography, exposure to photographic greats from the past, photo assignments, and photo instruction.

Outings

We like to go on at least one photographic outing every month and the venue is chosen by discussion at meetings. It is generally on a Saturday morning, but that does vary.

Members receive a monthly e-mail notice about forthcoming events and full details are also posted on our blog page.
